Male

wingspan : 19 mm

Syrmatia aethiops, Calderòn.

we believe that the - not so uncommon - black Syrmatia from East of the Andes are not aethiops. see https://www.sangay.eu/en/fiche-papillon/021-Riodinidae/003-Riodininae/005-Riodinini/045-Syrmatia/010-lamia/_

it would seem that aethiops would only fly West of the Andes and be exceedingly rare.

we have this specimen from Calderon, on BoA we have the type from Western Colombia and one specimen from Costa Rica, and, between their specimens that five major museums (Paris, London, Berlin, Gainesville and Krakow) were kind enough to take pictures of, we found only four, all from Colombia, two from the West, one from Muzo and one labeled "Bogotá-1916" and also Kim Garwood sent us the pictures of two specimens from Atlantic Costa Rica ; and, on the internet, the few pictures we found all come from East of the Andes, and show what we believe to be males of Syrmatia lamia.
