Junonia wahlbergi ssp
Junonia genoveva infuscata
Junonia of the evarete Group fly from the USA to Argentina and on all Caribbean Islands under many names, sometimes pointless.
the only serious knowledge of this Group comes from the work of Neild (Venezuela) and particularly Brévignon (French Guyana) ; so we used it as a base for our identifications, keeping in mind that Ecuador is clearly not French Guyana.
on the Western slopes of the Andes we would have at least two species, but neither one looks like any taxon described in Lalita and Christian Brévignon paper (october 2011), which is not surprising West of the Andes.
the first species (top), quite common from sea level to 800 m - dark butterflies if not for the preapical band - our assumption (highly debatable, based mostly on the wings underside) is a Western subspecies of Junonia wahlbergi. but we have two forms or ssp, in the North the FW stripe is yellow, in the South it is white with some pink.
the second species (bottom), not so common, collected at the seaside and then reared by Mathieu de Goulaine - similar to the first species, but with a wide light coloured HW rim - thanks to Andrew Neild for identifying it as Junonia genoveva infuscata.
